NOTES ON THE HP DESKJET SERIES v.3.0 PRINTER DRIVER FOR
MICROSOFT(R) WINDOWS(TM) 3.0 and 3.1
=======================================================
This document contains important information about the HP
DeskJet Series v.3.0 Printer Driver for Microsoft(R)
Windows(TM) 3.0 and 3.1 that supplements the on-line Help.
Read it using the Windows Notepad accessory. These topics
are covered:
* Printing in Grayscale
* System Configuration
* Enhanced Error Detection
* Network Support
* Application Notes
PRINTING IN GRAYSCALE
=====================
To print in grayscale, select the Black/Grayscale print mode
and one of the following dithering methods: Pattern, Scatter,
or Cluster.
To print black text after printing grayscale, use the
Black/Grayscale print mode, and select the Standard dithering
method.
SYSTEM CONFIGURATION
====================
An 80286 processor or greater is required to use the HP
DeskJet Series v.3.0 Printer Driver for Microsoft(R)
Windows(TM) 3.0 and 3.1.
Disk Requirements
The HP DeskJet Series v.3.0 Printer Driver for Microsoft(R)
Windows(TM) 3.0 and 3.1 requires approximately 3 MB of
free disk space for installation of the driver and the printer
fonts that came with it (Courier, CG Times, and Univers).
Using Serial (RS-232-C) Cables
To use serial (RS-232-C) cables, make sure that "Flow
Control" (in the Settings dialog box from the Ports dialog
box in the Control Panel) is set to "Hardware."
ENHANCED ERROR DETECTION
========================
The HP DeskJet Series v.3.0 Printer Driver for Microsoft(R)
Windows(TM) 3.0 and 3.1 has the ability to detect printer
error states such as out of paper or wrong print cartridge
installed. This "enhanced error detection" mode is only
available when the printer is connected directly to a
computer (not over a network) with either a standard parallel
(Centronics) or serial (RS-232-C) cable.
When the printer is printing across a network, to a file, or
through another third party software print product that
receives input from a print file (e.g., LPT1.PRN or LPT1.OS2),
the printer driver detects this, and enhanced error
detection is not available.
If you are encountering unresolvable hardware or software
printing conflicts, try turning off the enhanced error
detection to see if this resolves the problem. To turn off
the enhanced error detection, add the following lines to the
end of the WIN.INI configuration file (located in the
directory in which Windows was installed), through the
Notepad accessory:
[STATDLL]
override=yes
If these lines are not added to the WIN.INI file, or if
"override=no," the printer driver will default to using
enhanced error detection.
If the printer's status dialog remains on the
screen for an inordinate amount of time (with no action
taken) and no error messages are displayed, check
the following:
1. Does the printer setup dialog box caption match
the printer model being used? If not, reinstall the
printer driver, selecting the correct printer model.
2. Is the interface cable a standard parallel (Centronics)
or serial (RS-232-C) cable? If not, try another cable
and see if the problem persists. (Remember that, if you
are using a standard serial cable, printing will be slow.
3. Is enhanced error detection enabled? If so, try
overriding it, as described earlier in this section.
Using Print Manager
With enhanced error detection enabled, Windows
Print Manager is ignored by the HP DeskJet Series v.3.0
Printer Driver for Microsoft(R) Windows(TM) 3.0 and 3.1.
With Print Manager enabled or disabled, you may continue
to work in other applications while the application from
which you are currently printing finishes the print job.
Also, you may use Print Manager for network or other local
printing with all printer drivers other than the HP DeskJet
Series v.3.0 Printer Driver for Microsoft(R) Windows(TM).
With enhanced error detection disabled, you may use Print
Manager with the HP DeskJet Series v.3.0 Printer Driver for
Microsoft(R) Windows(TM) 3.0 and 3.1. This is not recommended,
since it usually takes longer to print a document with Print
Manager than without it. If you choose to use Print Manager
with the HP DeskJet Series 3.0 Printer Driver for
Microsoft(R) Windows(MT), you must first turn off the
printer driver's enhanced error detection as described in
the previous section and then place an "x" in the check box
next to "Use Print Manager" in the Control Panel.
NETWORK SUPPORT
===============
Hewlett-Packard does not support network configurations where
DeskJet family printers are used as shared devices.
APPLICATION NOTES
=================
At the time the HP DeskJet Series v.3.0 Printer Driver for
Microsoft(R) Windows(TM) 3.0 and 3.1 was released, the
following software application limitations existed:
For many applications (e.g., Microsoft Excel), if
the print job is cancelled by means other than the
application's cancel dialog, an error message may be
displayed by the application. Ignore this message and
continue.
ALDUS PAGEMAKER v4.0: Cannot cancel printing from the
Printing Status box. PageMaker controls all mouse and
keyboard input during printing. Cancel printing from
the PageMaker printing status box.
ALDUS PAGEMAKER v4.0: When printing some documents, the
contents of a page will occasionally shrink and be
printed in the upper left corner of the page.
AMI PRO: In order to use the background printing feature
in Ami Pro, you must disable the "Printing Status"
dialog box. The dialog box can be disabled by adding the
following lines to the WIN.INI configuration file:
[STATDLL]
statusdlg=0
ASYMMETRIX TOOLBOOK: "Print as Bitmap" must be selected
from the ToolBook Print Options in order to print.
BITSTREAM FACELIFT: Color pattern graphics do not print
correctly. Disable Facelift to print color pattern
graphics.
COREL DRAW v2.0: Color vector fills may print
incorrectly.
COREL DRAW v2.0: "Fit to Page" is not supported.
COREL DRAW v2.0: Draft mode is not supported.
Printing graphics with Pattern, Cluster, or Scatter
dithering may cause problems, since the application
does not handle dithering correctly.
HARVARD GRAPHICS: Overall slow performance with this
application is especially noticeable on 286 machines.
HP DESKSCAN II: Cannot print with default settings. The
work-around is to add the following lines to the WIN.INI
configuration file:
[STATDLL]
PageScan=n
INFORMIX WINGZ v1.1: When printing complex
documents in 286 Standard mode, the system may run out
of resources or "freeze." 4 MB or more memory is
recommended to use and to print in this application.
Try closing all other applications and printing again,
or print with Standard (or Standard Black) dithering
method for black, or Pattern dithering method for color.
LASERTOOLS PRINTCACHE: Unrecoverable application
errors, and/or system reboots may occur due to system
conflicts. Try running Windows in enhanced mode or
configure the PrintCache interrupt setting to use the
dynamic or normal timer driver.
LOTUS 1-2-3 for WINDOWS v1.0: When printing complex
documents in 286 Standard mode, the system may display
a message that there is not enough memory to print.
4 MB or more memory is recommended to use and to print
in this application. Try closing all other applications
and printing again, or print with Standard (or Standard
Black) dithering method for black, or Pattern dithering
method for color.
LOTUS FREELANCE: Displays and prints only in 4 colors:
black, white, red, and cyan. The work-around is to turn
off "display output colors" in the application user setup.
LOTUS FREELANCE FOR WINDOWS: After printing from
Freelance, the Program Manager becomes the active window
instead of returning to Freelance. To work-around this
problem, disable the "Printing Status" dialog box by
making the following changes to the WIN.INI configuration
file:
[STATDLL]
statusdlg=0
LOTUS FREELANCE FOR WINDOWS: This application does not
support the Pattern, Scatter, or Cluster dithering
methods. Use the Standard dithering method with this
application.
MICROGRAFX CHARISMA v2.O: When a page orientation or
page size is changed, the scalable printer fonts may be
replaced by bitmapped screen fonts. To avoid this,
print the document using the orientation and page size
in which it was created.
MICROGRAFX CHARISMA v2.0: Some color bitmapped graphics
may not print correctly.
MICROGRAFX CHARISMA V2.0: Printing graphics with Pattern,
Cluster, or Scatter dithering may cause problems,
since the application does not handle dithering correctly.
MICROGRAFX DESIGNER v3.01, 3.02, 3.1: When a page
orientation or page size is changed, the scalable
printer fonts may be replaced by bitmapped screen
fonts. To avoid this, print the document using the
orientation and page size in which it was created.
MICROGRAFX DESIGNER V3.01, 3.02, 3.1: Printing graphics
with Pattern, Cluster, or Scatter dithering may cause
problems, since the application does not handle dithering
correctly.
MICROSOFT EXCEL v3.0: When pasting graphics from
other applications, be aware that Excel may print the
pasted graphics with the screen background color of the
source.
MICROSOFT EXCEL v3.0: When printing fonts larger
than 40 point, manually enlarge the cell size before
printing.
MICROSOFT EXCEL V3.0, 4.0: Does not support draft mode.
MICROSOFT EXCEL V4.0: Some paths to the driver dialogs do
not work correctly. Settings are not retained. Use the
following steps to reach a printer setup that will work:
File / Page Setup / Printer Setup / Setup
MICROSOFT PROJECT v1.0: Top or bottom borders may be
truncated (lost), resulting in some lines not being
printed.
MICROSOFT POWERPOINT v2.0: Color pattern fills do
not print correctly for any of the dithering
methods.
MICROSOFT PUBLISHER: Driver changes in the print settings
are not retained with this application. The work-around
is to use the Windows Control Panel to change settings.
MICROSOFT PUBLISHER v1.0A with WINDOWS 3.1: If you are
trouble printing large images, try adding the following
lines to the MSPUB.INI file in your Windows directory:
[PRINTING]
bandinmemory=1
MICROSOFT WINDOWS WRITE v3.0: Some Large point size
characters (e.g., 100 point) may not print.
MICROSOFT WORD FOR WINDOWS v1.0 and v1.1: At large
point sizes, the double underline will appear as a
solid line.
MICROSOFT WORD FOR WINDOWS v1.0 and v1.1: This
application does not recognize newly installed printer
fonts until you choose Printer Setup from the File menu
and click OK.
MICROSOFT WORD FOR WINDOWS v1.0 and v1.1: When
printing in landscape orientation, italic characters
may not print completely.
VENTURA PUBLISHER: This application does not print TIFF
images correctly. Try choosing the Pattern, Cluster, or
Scatter Dithering option.
VENTURA PUBLISHER: This application cannot print multiple
copies, because it does not correctly query the printer
driver for multiple copy capability.
WINDOWS FILE MANAGER v3.0: When Print File is chosen,
the last line on a page may not be printed. Try
printing from within an application (e.g., Write).
WORDPERFECT v5.1: This application can have trouble
printing some color images. Try the suggested
work-arounds in the order given, printing between each to
test the solution:
1. Make sure that "Fast Graphics Display" is turned off.
2. Insert the following lines in the WIN.INI
configuration file:
[STATDLL]
PageScan=n
The following printing problems occur for Draft
Quality mode. Try printing using Normal or Presentation
Quality mode instead.
INFORMIX WINGZ v1.1: Does not print correctly.
LOTUS WORD PROCESSING DIVISION AMI PROFESSIONAL
v1.2: Some graphics do not print.
LOTUS WORD PROCESSING DIVISION AMI PROFESSIONAL
v1.2: Graphics box outlines do not print.
MICROSOFT EXCEL v2.1c/d, 3.0, 4.0: Text does not
print.
MICROSOFT POWERPOINT v2.0: Text is compressed
when printed.
MICROSOFT PAINTBRUSH: Does not print in Draft
mode only; ejects blank pages.
OMNIS 5 v1.01: Graphics do not print.
PROWRITE PLUS: Text does not print.
ZENOGRAPHICS PIXIE v2.0: Text is compressed when
printed.
The following printing problems occur for
monitor/display drivers:
ATI/HERCULES DISPLAY DRIVERS: Color patterns
may not print properly using the Standard
dithering method, but will print properly
with either the Pattern or Scatter dithering
method.
MATROX IMPRESSION DISPLAY DRIVER: Some black
graphics do not print with the Standard (or
Standard Black) dithering method, but do print
with either the Pattern or the Scatter
dithering method.
RASTER OPS MONITOR (1024 X 768) DRIVER: Has
problems which cause random specks in Black/
Grayscale mode.
VIDEO SEVEN SCREEN DRIVER: The underline width
is too wide on 90 degree rotated text. The
work-around is to switch to Standard dithering
mode in Windows.
VIDEO SEVEN SCREEN DRIVER: The first letter on
the left page margin may get truncated on the
hard copy.
